Almaty Guide
What is special in Almaty?
Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant atmosphere. Nestled against the backdrop of the majestic Tien Shan mountains, Almaty offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and stunning natural landscapes. The city's history as a major stop on the Silk Road and its diverse population contribute to its unique cultural mosaic, making it a must-visit destination in Central Asia.
Gondola Ride to Kok-Tobe Hill
One of the highlights of any trip to Almaty is the gondola ride to Kok-Tobe Hill. This cable car journey offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains, making it an unforgettable experience. As you ascend, you can watch Almaty spread out beneath you, with its bustling streets, lush parks, and striking architecture. Once at the top, Kok-Tobe Hill provides even more spectacular views, especially at sunset when the city is bathed in a golden glow.
Visiting Big Almaty Lake
Big Almaty Lake, located about 15 kilometers south of the city, is another must-see attraction. This stunning alpine lake, surrounded by towering peaks, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The lake's vivid turquoise waters and the breathtaking scenery make it a popular spot for photography, hiking, and picnicking. The area is accessible by car or through various hiking trails, making it a perfect day trip destination.
To go there, you can take the Kazakh version of Uber, Yandex Taxi. You can also make an agreement with the driver to wait for you for a small amount of money, ensuring you have a ride back. Especially on weekends with good weather, finding a taxi can be challenging due to the number of visitors. A round trip with a two-hour wait will cost you about 35 USD. Taxis stop 7 km before the lake, but you can rent a mountain scooter for 20 USD per hour. This is recommended if you don't enjoy hiking the steep 7 km trail.
Experiencing Traditional Kazakh Cuisine
A visit to Almaty is not complete without experiencing traditional Kazakh cuisine, particularly the unique dishes of horse meat and drinks like kumis (fermented mare's milk). Horse meat, a staple in Kazakh culture, is used in various dishes such as beshbarmak (boiled meat served with noodles), kazy (a sausage made from horse rib meat), and zhaya (dried meat). These dishes offer a rich taste of Kazakhstan's culinary heritage. Kumis, with its slightly sour and tangy taste, is a traditional beverage made from fermented mare's milk, believed to have numerous health benefits. Sampling these foods in local restaurants, cafes, or markets like the Green Bazaar provides a deep dive into the local culture and flavors, making it an unforgettable part of your Almaty journey.
